Introduction to the 21st Century’s Greatest Horror Films

Welcome to the 2026 edition (7th edition) of The 21st Century’s Greatest Horror Films! Although the list has continued to receive updates on iCheckMovies, the website version hasn’t been updated since 2020. This edition also introduces some significant changes. Previously, the rankings were compiled using lists specifically covering films from the 2000s onwards. Now, they’re drawn directly from the overall results, which is filtered to include only films released from 2000 onwards. The list has also been expanded from a Top 250 to a Top 500.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The rankings are compiled from thousands of horror film lists, with each list weighted according to its type and source. A few formulas later, the result is an attempt to narrow thousands of films down to something resembling a definitive guide to the best horror films.

Of course, no consensus list is ever going to be perfect, and popularity will always play a part. But hopefully the rankings will help you discover something new, revisit an old favourite, or find your next horror obsession.

The site also uses information from IMDb, including original film titles. Genre keywords are sourced from RateYourMusic, manually and slowly. Although the name and concept were inspired by Bill Georgaris’ They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?, this project is not affiliated with that website.
